Bracken Ridge Safety House
The Safety House Program greatly improves the chances that should a child run into a Safety House, someone will be able to provide immediate help. Volunteers are chosen after obtaining a Blue Card (suitability check for working with children) and having met certain criteria such as generally being at home at the times children are going to and from school, easy access to front door, no dogs in the front yard and willingness to call the police when a child does ask for help.
At school children are taught how and when to use a Safety House, ie when they are lost, hurt, frightened by bullies, strangers or dogs. They know that the police will be called every time.
There are two ways for volunteers to help. If you are generally at home at the times children are in transit to and from school you can apply to become a Safety House.
The other way to help is by keeping existing Safety Houses safe by checking an area near you each month. Then every three months do a face-to-face check of those houses to make sure things are still okay for them to continue in the program. This is not time consuming, however it is essential to the safe running of the program.
If you can help in anyway to keep this worthwhile program going please contact either
Beth Keillor on 3261 5216 or Carol Fisher on 3269 5764.
Meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at 7:30 pm at the Bracken Ridge Library Meeting Room. All welcome.
