McDowall Bushcare Group – Glendora Greenies
The McDowall Bushcare Group is better known locally as the Glendora Greenies.
The Group commenced in March 2003, and to date have planted in excess of 650 native plants and trees. They are a band of enthusiastic, bush loving local residents who willingly volunteer our time to preserve and enhance riparian vegetation along Cabbage Tree Creek and the much used bicycle track which runs parallel to the Creek. As well as planting trees and plants native to McDowall Glendora Greenies have an ongoing task of treating and removing an extremely invasive weed called Cats Claw creeper (Macfadyena unguiscati). This creeper is particularly virulent in this area as it strangles and suffocates the beautiful native vegetation. One of the members has taken some wonderful photos of a wild beehive and a koala. Of course, the area is home to the many wonderful native birds and to our delight on one of the working bees the group was treated to the very curious antics of the male whipbird.
The Glendora Greenies were nominated for the 2006 Queensland Arbour Day Awards.
Glendora Greenies meet every third Saturday of the month and newcomers are all welcome. Councillor Carol Cashman is a very active and enthusiastic member of the Group and visits every month. The habitat coordinator, Lesley Watson, can be contacted through Carol’s office on 3667 6000.
