A long-neglected area near the Brisbane Cricket Ground is set to be dramatically revitalised, Councillor Amanda Cooper, the Lord Mayor’s spokeswoman for Urban Planning and Development, said today.
Cr Cooper said the Woolloongabba Urban Centre Improvement Project would see the area transformed into a mixed-use community that would become an attraction for people across the city.
``As cricket fans enjoy their summer at the Gabba, they can look forward to seeing some real positive changes in coming seasons,’’ she said.
``This is going to see this much maligned area, which has been stagnating for some time, finally blossom into a precinct that will be a real asset to Brisbane.’’
Cr Cooper said the structure plan process would see more public space, an improved local road network with an emphasis on pedestrian and cyclist safety and streetscape improvements to improve the aesthetics of the area.
Logan Rd would be closed at the intersection of Ipswich Rd and transformed into a tree-lined boulevard.
She said $3 million had been allocated to the project in Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s 2007/08 budget.
``At one end you have the Broadway Hotel – one of the most beautiful pubs left in Brisbane – and at the other you have the famous cricket ground,’’ she said.
``The construction of the Clem Jones tunnel will allow us to deliver a new public space and we would anticipate an antiques precinct in the area.’’
Cr Cooper said a detailed design would be completed by January, which would be open to public consultation.
Construction on Stage One is set to begin in April.
