Brisbane well ahead of water saving targets

Brisbane residents have saved nearly 15 million litres of water a day above and beyond the regulated State Government targets, the Lord Mayor’s water spokeswoman Jane Prentice said today.

Cr Prentice said water consumers within Brisbane City Council boundaries were well ahead of its regulatory requirements, which stipulated the city must save 25.7 million litres every day.

``We’ve not only achieved that, but we’ve gone above and beyond by saving a massive 40.06 megalitres per day,’’ Cr Prentice said.

``That’s about 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of water saving every day and an impressive 14.36 million litres above the State-regulated benchmarks.

``I think every Brisbane resident who has taken steps to cut back their water usage can be justifiably proud of this achievement. It’s a tremendous effort.’’

With Level 6 water restrictions now in force, Cr Prentice said Council was working to boost Brisbane’s dwindling drinking water supply through projects like the $75 million Brisbane Aquifer Project.

Cr Prentice said Brisbane was tapping in to its underground water reserves, which could supplement the city's supply with an extra 20 million litres of water per day.

``The Brisbane Aquifer Project is designed to ease the burden on existing surface water supplies, by tapping into naturally occurring aquifers across Brisbane's south,’’ she said.

``This project is essential to ensure the region’s water supply in the future.’’
