Show your love by donating for a greener Brisbane

15 January, 2008

Twelve thousand trees will be planted in the next month as part of Council’s O2 project, which will eventually see one million trees planted across the city forming the southeast’s first regional carbon sink.

The pioneering Oxley to Ocean program is the centrepiece to Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s Green Heart CitySmart strategy to make Brisbane carbon neutral by 2026.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said over the next few weeks, a diverse range of trees would be planted in three locations to enhance Brisbane’s ecosystem.

And residents could also make a tax-deductible contribution toward the O2 Project to offset their carbon emissions through the Brisbane Environment Trust’s Signature Brisbane initiative.

“From today, people will be able to contribute to the O2 plantings – the first scheme to allow residents to do this in south east Queensland,” Cr Newman said.

“One of the best things about this alliance is that residents will be able to see first-hand the effect their dollars are making with projects across the city,” he said.

“We’re also committed to restoring Brisbane’s wonderful biodiversity and increasing the important connections between areas of bushland.”

The first stage will see 12,000 trees will be planted at Anstead Bushland Reserve, Pullenvale, John Wilson Reserve, Pinjarra Hills and Cliveden Park, Indooroopilly

Second and third stage plantings will be announced in the New Year.
