THE search is on to find Brisbane residents with the best tips and tricks to save water in the home – or in the garden.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said while the drought presented significant challenges, Brisbane residents had really stepped up to the mark and were adopting some really innovative approaches.
“Talkback radio programs, newspapers, blogs and dozens of letters to Council have shown Brisbane residents are keen to share their wonderful Water-Smart inventions and suggestions on how to reduce daily water use, as well as use water more efficiently,” Cr Newman said.
"In the last year, Brisbane residents and businesses have done an outstanding job in conserving water – with about 30 per cent less use than this time last year.”
Cr Newman said the majority of the city's residents had reduced their water use by making simple changes in the house and garden, while others had developed innovative and less-conventional ways to save water.
“With the scale of water use reduction in Brisbane, it’s clear there are a lot of people doing some pretty extraordinary things to conserve water. We can all benefit from the efforts and experiences of our fellow residents and this will be a valuable resource,” Cr Newman said.
With the search now on to find Brisbane's most effective water saving tip or trick, Cr Newman said Council would next week launch a website that would allow people to benefit from practical Water-Smart ideas other Brisbane residents had developed.
Cr Newman said all water-saving tips and tricks could be submitted via the Council's drought website at: www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/drought
"Council's website will showcase the most inventive and practical ways we can all prolong the water supply in our three regional dams – by reducing our water use."
Tips and tricks can be submitted to the website from Monday 11th September. All submissions will be evaluated by Brisbane City Council's drought specialists and the most practical suggestions will be showcased on Council's new drought website.
The best entry each month will win a 'NoWet' waterless car clean kit, courtesy of Council's Watersense Blue Van and 'NoWet'.
Cr Newman said Brisbane residents could also now check their water consumption each week and compare their water use with the Brisbane average.
How does your daily water consumption compare with a water efficient household? People per Household Water efficient house * Water efficient unit / townhouse* 1 260 litres/day 220 litres/day 2 430 litres/day 390 litres/day 3 530 litres/day 490 litres/day 4 640 litres/day 600 litres/day 5 750 litres/day 710 litres/day 6 850 litres/day 810 litres/day
* These figures are not current residential water consumption figures. These are target figures and are based on Council's drought management targets and the Brisbane average. They have been developed to help compare current residential water consumption with a water efficient household. Water consumption may vary with your property size and other factors.
