Bio-rentention gains award for McDowall

29 November, 2006

The McDowall Bio-retention System is one of three landscape construction projects around Brisbane that have won an award from the Queensland Association of Landscape Industries (QALI) said Cr Carol Cashman (Bracken Ridge Ward).

Cr Cashman said that the three landscaping projects around Brisbane, McDowall, the Valley Gateway intersection upgrade and the Fison Avenue West boulevarde, have come up trumps in the latest round of awards conducted by QALI.

“The awards recognise the hard work and commitment that the Council has to beautifying the city’s landscape,” Cr Cashman said.

“It was thrilling to have the McDowell Bio-rentention System get an award.

“The project itself is environmentally rewarding and to achieve recognition from the relevant state body makes it better.

“The installation of bio-retention systems or ‘bio pods’ aims to significantly reduce nutrients and total suspended solids entering our waterways and ultimately Moreton Bay.”

The Valley Gateway intersection upgrade captured the unique identity and character of the Fortitude Valley and Newstead area and mirrors the surrounding architecture. It includes new trees and garden beds, new street furniture, pedestrian lighting and bins, decorative up-lights and public spaces.

Brisbane City Council’s boulevards are gardens running along major arterial roads for road corridor beautification. The Fison Avenue boulevard has been designed and constructed to showcase to motorists and visitors coming over the Gateway Motorway the aesthetics and ambience of Brisbane’s lush subtropical environment.

This year’s success follows on from the three awards Council won last year which included a gold award in landscape maintenance and two merit awards to landscape construction of Suburban Centre Improvement Projects (SCIPs).

“We look forward to our local SCIP project at Gawain Road, Bracken Ridge doing well at the awards when it is completed,” said Cr Cashman.
