Bald Hills students become more active in 2007

15 December, 2006

Bracken Ridge Councillor Carol Cashman is delighted that Bald Hills State School is one of 13 schools across Brisbane to be chosen to participate in next year’s highly successful and award winning Active School Travel Program.

Councillor Cashman said the program encouraged children to walk, cycle or catch public transport to school each day.

“In the past year the Active School Travel Program has seen some schools recording up to a 20% reduction in use of car travel,” Cr Cashman said.

“This means less traffic congestion around schools and an increase in levels of physical activity.”

“Out of the 260 primary schools in Brisbane, a total of 40 schools phoned to register their interest in the 2007 program and from that, we had 26 formal applications including the one from Bald Hills State School,” said Cr Cashman.

“Bald Hills State School was one of 10 out of 26 schools chosen for the project. The Council’s criteria is things such as need, enthusiasm and feasibility.”

Cr Cashman said “I am looking forward to working with the school to make sure our local project is one of the best in Brisbane.”
