Student Competitons for 'Local Government Week'

03 April, 2007

Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor Carol Cashman is encouraging all residents to participate in Local Government Week 2007 from May 28 to June 2.

Cr Cashman said this year’s theme “Roads, Driving Queensland-Pathways to Progress,” was particularly important as it supported road safety and conveyed to the community the council’s commitment to road construction and maintenance.

Cr Cashman advised Local Government Week offered a wide range of competitions with cash prizes on offer for both primary and secondary school students.

The primary school competition is broken up into two categories, one for Years 1-3 and one for years 4-7 with students to battle it out to see who has the best colouring-in skills.

Cr Cashman said the best colourer in the region will receive up to $50 for their efforts and will then go onto compete for $150 in the State competition.

“In the past, we’ve had some very creative entries and I’m excited to see all the talented pictures that will come flooding in this year.”

“The year 4-7 state winner will be flown to the launch of Local Government Week in Brisbane, to receive their prize on the 28th of May,” Cr Cashman said.

A resource kit is being sent to all schools and winners will be announced on Monday May 21.

Cr Cashman encouraged all high school students to participate in the Funky Street competition which will see students come up with two new street names and an explanation why they chose those names.

Teachers will judge their school’s best entry then submit it to their local council, who will choose a regional winner to compete for the $400 State prize and the opportunity to be flown into Brisbane for the launch of Local Government Week.

“The Bracken Ridge Ward has a lot of young creative minds, and I’m sure picking just one winner is going to be tough.

“We have some bright young students in this area and I have no doubt that regional winners who go on to represent us at state level will highlight to the rest of Queensland how vibrant this community is,” Cr Cashman said.
