Councillor questions developer’s claims

01 June, 2007

Councillor Carol Cashman is questioning reports that WAW Developments will be including a Hindu temple in a proposed shopping centre for 361-367 Bracken Ridge Road.

The Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor said that any suggestion that the shopping centre development proposed by WAW Development is in anyway connected with the Hindu Society’s land is not correct.

“The Hindu Society of Queensland own property adjacent to the land that WAW Development have the application on and it is an entirely different block of land.  Any future proposal to develop the land owned by the Hindu Society would be a separate development application.

“WAW Developments should be careful not to confuse the issue by suggesting that the Hindu Society’s land is connected to their proposal in any way.

Cr Cashman said this was just another attempt by WAW Developments at trying to get community support behind a project that had been strongly protested against.

“WAW Developments proposal is not supported by the council and is having to be advertised for a third time due to changes and technical issues with the application.

“I am concerned that the Hindu Society of Queensland is getting innocently caught up in the issue which should be a matter between WAW Developments and the Council’s legitimate assessment process,” she said.

Cr Cashman said the council did not support the WAW Developments proposal as the block of land was not adequately zoned for a shopping centre.

“There’s already an adequate supply of properly zoned land for shopping uses for the existing and future needs of the area,” she said.
