Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor Carol Cashman is seeking out Safety House volunteers to help keep children safe as they travel to and from school.
Cr Cashman said statistics show there are fewer incidents in a safety house area than in a non-safety house area.
Currently there are 62 Safety Houses in the Bracken Ridge Ward and maps of their locations can be found at the communities schools and the Bracken Ridge Kindergarten and Preschool in Barrett Street.
“For children that travel to and from school alone, these houses are vital to their security.”
“The program has official police backing and all Safety Houses will have yellow identification plates on their letterboxes and special guidelines that the volunteer inside must follow.”
“The current volunteers in this community based program provide vital security to children in this area and I encourage more people to join up as this wonderful program cannot survive without your support,” Cr Cashman said.
Cr Cashman said assisting in the program didn’t necessarily mean your home had to become a Safety House.
“There are other options available such as driving by houses to check there are no unauthorised letterbox signs or offering one hour of your time a month to do checks on Safety Houses to ensure they are still safe places for refuge,” Cr Cashman said.
Cr Cashman said anybody interested in volunteering for this great program could contact Deidre Windham on 3602 5250.
