Lord Mayor unveils Brisbane’s “One Stop” climate change arsenal
BRISBANE Lord Mayor Campbell Newman will today unveil Brisbane’s newest arsenal in a grassroots fight against climate change – the ‘CitySmart’ van.
Cr Newman said the new CitySmart vans would travel Brisbane “suburb by suburb” to offer people the latest information and government incentives to help Brisbane households save time, money, resources and the environment.
“The CitySmart vans will be an increasingly valuable community resource in my ‘house by house, street by street – and suburb by suburb’ mission to make Brisbane Australia’s most sustainable city. Increasing climatic changes and global warming is an international problem but the action has to start locally,” Cr Newman said.
“As individuals and households, I want to focus on what we can do for our environment. My goal is to provide people with the facts and then offer them practical and affordable ways to make the change”.
Cr Newman said the CitySmart vans would be mobile one-stop environmental shops that offered people practical and affordable ways to increase water efficiency, reduce energy consumption – and reduce their environmental footprint. “There were some really terrific initiatives in the Federal, State and Council budgets that will help Brisbane residents reduce their environmental footprint and become more sustainable. It makes sense to put them all in the same place for people to choose – and use,” he said.
Cr Newman said residents would also be able to calculate their household carbon emissions, as well as purchase a variety of sustainable products from the vans, including water saving showers, pool covers and energy-efficient lights.
“The CitySmart vans will also provide green choice gardening tips on composting and collecting rainwater, as well as information on switching to green power and reducing waste,” he said.
“We have seen what happens when governments ignore important issues like water and I don’t want people in 20 years to look back and wonder why we didn’t take the environment seriously.”
