High winds could trash homes in Bracken Ridge Ward

21 August, 2007

Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor, Amanda Cooper, encourages residents to tidy up loose garbage as Brisbane prepares itself for a category two cyclone.

Severe weather warnings from the Bureau of Metrology have listed wind speeds as fast as 90 km/h and advise residents to beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

Cr Cooper said by cleaning up the loose garbage and securing their homes, residents are safe against hazardous objects caught up by strong winds.

“I’d encourage all residents to make sure their homes and surrounding areas are safe from anything that can be easily swept up,” Cr Cooper said.

Cr Cooper said in response to the weather warning issued earlier today, the Brisbane City Council has increased sanitation staff levels and facilities to speed up kerbside collection to reduce loose debris.

“Lord Mayor Newman’s fast action in response to the weather warning will reduce the risk that someone may get hurt by rubbish flying at high speeds.

“I advise those who have participated in the kerbside collection please secure your items and avoid leaving them outside,” Cr Cooper said.

If residents do come across fallen or damaged powerlines, please contact the SES on 132 500 for emergency assistance.
