MEDIA RELEASE               10 September 2007

Preliminary work begins on Hale St Link

Work on the long-awaited Hale Street Link project will get under way today – as the Lord Mayor’s fourth TransApex project kicks into gear.

Councillor Graham Quirk said from tonight, work would begin on upgrading the right-hand turn from Coronation Drive to William Jolly Bridge to improve traffic flows and pedestrian safety.

“Currently there is only one lane that turns right onto the bridge and during peak-hour, cars regularly back up and block traffic on Coronation Drive,” Cr Quirk said.

“Once the intersection is upgraded, motorists will have two lanes to turn into William Jolly Bridge which will really improve the way traffic flows through the intersection.”

The preliminary work comes as Council and the preferred tenderer designs the bridge, ahead of the start of construction next year.

Improvements would also be made to pedestrian safety with several new crossings being put in place, including one to North Quay.

Cr Quirk said the start of the Hale Street Link project was another sign of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman’s commitment to getting important infrastructure work underway.

“In just three years in office, Cr Newman has done more for Brisbane’s road network than any other leader,” Cr Quirk said.

“His vision for a series of tunnels and cross river bridges to divert traffic away from the city centre is coming to fruition. Construction of the North South Bypass Tunnel is ahead of schedule, Northern Link has been fast tracked to a business case, tenders have been called for the Airport Link, and we’re now seeing preliminary work on Hale St Link.”

Cr Quirk said the major work on the Hale Street Link would start on Coronation Drive and Hale Street in January 2008 with the temporary removal of the right-turn lanes from Hale Street to Coronation Drive.

“Motorists will experience significant delays on roads in the area when the major work on Hale Street Link starts. The aim of the associated intersection upgrades, like the one starting at William Jolly Bridge on Monday, is to allow traffic to move more freely.”

The Coronation Drive/William Jolly Bridge intersection upgrade is expected to take two months, with the majority of work conducted between 8pm and 5am, seven days a week.
